While I was away, Hurricane-related emails flooded my inbox

This is a screenshot from the Sky News (UK) coverage of the Hurricane relief efforts.

I think it speaks for itself.

And, regarding the bizarro war going on in the comments section, let me just say this:

I never said Bush was responsible for the Hurricane, you stupid ignorant fuckers. I just think he fucked up royally in terms of handling it. And I also blame his administration. On Wednesday, the 31st, I walked past Spamalot on my way to the subway. There were giant black hummers outside and secret service people walking around all over the place. I put on my best girl-face and asked who was inside. After a little eyelash-batting and hair-twirling, I asked enough questions to find out it was Condoleeza Rice.

Hey, Secretary of State! The lower portion of your country was just destroyed! What are you going to do next? buy some shoes and take in a show!

You are right, you didn't say that it was Bush's fault that the hurricane hit, but you DID seem to think it was his fault that it was such a catastrophe. You called me a "stupid ignorant fucker" in your post, but what about the people of New Orleans who stayed in town when there was a hurricane coming, and there were warned to evacuate? Are they also "stupid ignorant fuckers", as well? Maybe if they were so busy sitting around waiting for government help for four days, they could have done something their damn selves besides shooting at rescue helicopters and raping women in the astrodome.

As for Mrs. Rice, if you knew you were going to be walking around in a place that's flooded, wouldn't you want some backup shoes?

The folks who stayed in New Orleans as the levees broke, not the hurricane that didn't even hit the city were neither stupid nor looking for a hand out.

People assume that poor people are bums or vagrants dirty and smelly in the back alleys of all American cities. A majority of these poor people have befallen on hard times and do not wish to be leaving such meager lifestyles.

Imagine then why so many New Orleanians stayed --with the only things theys possessed--their homes. The city officials told them to leave quickly, but, if you're poor, how are you going to leave. Rent a car? Buy a car? Take the bus with money you don't have?

They have legs. I saw a bunch of them standing around waiting for the $2,000 handout from FEMA. The standing didn't seem to bother them, so I don't think walking would be that taxing on them either.

When it comes to survival, you do what you have to do. Money can buy you a car, it can buy you a bus ticket, but it can't buy you common sense. Common sense could have prevented this tragedy from happening in so many ways it's not even funny. New Orleans has had 300 years to get this shit straight, and believe it or not, George Bush hasn't been holding them back all this time.

Also, this next sentence contains very important words of wisdom, please pay attention.

IF YOU ARE IN DANGER OF BEING HIT BY A CAT. 3 HURRICANE OR ABOVE, GET OUT OF THE AREA IMMEDIATELY, ESPECIALLY IF SURRONDED BY BODIES OF WATER. THE GOVERNMENT IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR LOSS OF LIFE DUE TO NOT USING COMMON SENSE. YOU HAVE LEGS; WALK IF YOU HAVE TO. GET OUT OF THERE. DO NOT STAY.
